Position Overview

SARS is looking for a proactive and detail-focused Software Asset Management (SAM) Consultant to join its Asset Management team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing software assets throughout their lifecycle, ensuring compliance with licensing agreements, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies. The role also involves overseeing cloud-based software resources, particularly within Microsoft Azure environments, to maximize software value while maintaining governance and cost efficiency.

Purpose of the Role

To effectively manage, optimize, and govern software assets, cloud resources, and IT infrastructure within a hybrid cloud environment in accordance with SARS policies, standards, and operational requirements.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

Option 1

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma (NQF 7) in Information Technology, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5–7 years of experience in Software Asset Management.
  • At least 2–3 years of experience at a specialist or functional level.

Advantageous Certifications

  • Microsoft Azure Fundamentals
  • Certified Software Asset Manager (CSAM)
  • Licensing Industry Standards Association (LISA)
  • ITIL Certification

Alternative Qualification

  • Senior Certificate (NQF 4) with ITIL Certification.
  • 10 years of Software Asset Management experience, including 2–3 years at a technically skilled level.

Key Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong understanding of software licensing models, including user-based, device-based, and subscription licensing.
  • Ability to interpret End User License Agreements (EULAs), particularly from vendors such as Microsoft.
  • Experience managing cloud licensing, monitoring usage, and controlling costs within Azure environments.
  • Proficiency in Software Asset Management tools and inventory tracking systems.
  • Experience reconciling IT asset records with financial asset registers.
  • Knowledge of software compliance requirements and audit processes.
  • Understanding of IT infrastructure, operating systems, networks, and software deployment.
  • Strong analytical skills for identifying software usage trends, optimizing licensing, and reducing costs.
  • Ability to prepare reports, dashboards, and compliance documentation.

Key Responsibilities

Software Asset Management

  • Manage the complete software asset lifecycle, including procurement, deployment, utilization, maintenance, and retirement.
  • Administer software asset management platforms and tools.
  • Maintain accurate software inventories and licensing records.
  • Respond to software audit requests and ensure compliance with licensing agreements.
  • Monitor software and cloud asset performance to ensure service quality and operational efficiency.
  • Resolve asset-related issues and queries promptly.

Cloud Resource and Cost Management

  • Support cloud resource management within Microsoft Azure environments.
  • Develop and manage cloud budgets and cost-control initiatives.
  • Monitor cloud consumption and identify opportunities for cost optimization.
  • Assist with cloud architecture and resource governance activities.

Governance and Compliance

  • Ensure software and cloud assets comply with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and internal policies.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of governance, compliance, ethics, and risk management processes.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain effective relationships with internal stakeholders and external suppliers.
  • Collaborate with vendors to optimize software licensing, maintenance agreements, and service delivery.
  • Share knowledge and best practices to support continuous improvement.

Financial Management

  • Perform budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis related to software and cloud assets.
  • Analyse large datasets to improve IT spending efficiency and asset utilization.

Client Service

  • Support a culture of service excellence by providing expert advice and specialist support to stakeholders.
  • Deliver high-quality asset management services that meet business requirements and compliance standards.
