Trainee Train Assistant – Postmasburg, Northern Cape

Purpose of the Role

The Trainee Train Assistant supports the Train Driver in operating and handling various types of trains and locomotives safely and efficiently. The goal is to ensure freight and cargo are transported securely, without damage, and delivered on schedule to meet customer expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Report for duty and perform assigned tasks during shifts.
  • Assist with preparing locomotives by checking equipment, conducting brake tests, and ensuring operational readiness.
  • Prepare and test communication devices such as radios and telemeters.
  • Conduct pre-departure inspections of trains and locomotives to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.
  • Assist with coupling and uncoupling rail vehicles and completing required documentation.
  • Carry out shunting operations, including moving, placing, and removing wagons as instructed.
  • Support the Train Driver during journeys by monitoring signals, observing train operations, responding to incidents, and ensuring safe train movement.
  • Follow all safety procedures, operational rules, and company instructions.
  • Provide timely reports on incidents, delays, or route deviations.
  • Complete administrative tasks, including maintaining train journals and shift records.

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Grade 12 (Matric) with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years old for future train-driving responsibilities.
  • Minimum height requirement of 1.6 metres.
  • Must be physically fit with satisfactory hearing, vision, and mental fitness.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Must successfully pass medical examinations, psychomotor assessments, and safety behavioural evaluations.
  • Willingness to undergo ongoing medical and safety assessments every 12 months.
  • Must complete and pass both theoretical and practical Train Assistant training and obtain certification.

Candidates should demonstrate knowledge or the ability to learn:

  • Train operating procedures and railway safety regulations.
  • Communication systems and locomotive operations.
  • Shunting procedures and train handling.
  • Health and safety legislation and company policies.

  • Observation, concentration, and situational awareness.
  • Time and stress management.
  • Reasoning, judgement, and numerical ability.
  • Coordination and psychomotor skills.
  • Basic locomotive preparation and handling.
