The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Department of
Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) and is governed by a Board. The organisation is an
authoritative voice for weather and climate related services in South Africa and is a member of the
World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) to fulfil a range of international obligations of the
government. The SAWS strives to be a Weather and Climate Centre of Excellence, providing innovative
solutions to ensure a WeatherSMART region, sustainable development and economic growth.

Job Summary:
The General Worker is essentially responsible for providing assistance to artisans, and to perform
rudimentary maintenance tasks within the office as well as at observation sites.
Key Performance Areas:

Assist with the Installation and Inspection of remote observation sites.

Repairing of structures that house meteorological instrumentation such as masts, stands, stays

Perform Terrain Maintenance including such tasks as weeding, mowing of grass and ensuring
that litter and other forms of general waste is removed.

Cleaning of all indoor weather office facilities (including restrooms) where necessary

Rudimentary maintenance of buildings where necessary

Review applicable TQM processes

Monitor and report on the use of assets and key infrastructure. (Asset Verification)

Fleet management

Control of adequate stock levelsrequired for maintenance activities.

Participate within the work environment in such a manner that legislative requirements
relating to Occupational Health & Safety are met.

Attend training activities asinstructed.

Sharing knowledge and skills with appropriate stakeholders thereby promoting the strategy of
SAWS being a learning organization.

Participate in mentoring initiatives

Seek opportunities within the work environment to acquire additional skills which would enhance
current job performance and add significant value to the operations of the office and the
organisation.

Support staff involved in exhibiting SAWS products and services at dedicated client contact events
such as presentations, exhibitions, corporate events, workshops, conventions, expos etc.

Assisting with School visits


Requirements:

Matric/ Grade 12 / NQF Level 4

Valid Driver’s License

Welding and general handyman courses (added advantage)
