EE Business Intelligence reports that De Ruyter survived an assassination attempt at his office in Megawatt Park in Sunninghill, where he drank a cup of latte laced with poison last month.

Group CEO Chris Yelland and News24 reported that De Ruyter had confirmed the plot to assassinate him. However, police are yet to speak of an investigation and Eskom could not be reached for comment.

EE Business said the attempt to take on De Ruyter’s life took place in December – the day after he submitted his resignation – but before his decision became known to the public.

Reportedly, after drinking a cup of coffee in his office, de Ruyter became weak, dizzy and confused, shaking and vomiting violently.

Then he collapsed, unable to walk.

EE Business said De Ruyter was taken to the doctor’s office by his security staff, where his condition was diagnosed as cyanide poisoning. Subsequent tests confirmed extremely high levels of cyanide in his body.

Meanwhile, the South African National Defense Force (SANDF) has been deployed to several power plants to prevent crime and vandalism.
