Junior Marine Scientist

South African National Parks is looking for a self-motivated Junior Marine Scientist to assist the Cape Research Center (CRC) with research and monitoring of both marine and estuarine environments and contribute to the protection and sustainability of South Africa’s marine environments. The primary responsibilities are in Table Mountain, Robben Island, Agulhas, West Coast and Namaqua National Parks and marine protected areas.

This is a permanent position assisting the CRC with research and monitoring of both marine and estuarine environments. The incumbent is expected to conduct fieldwork as well as work with data processing. The incumbent will also work closely with SANParks staff and stakeholders within the scope of marine biodiversity conservation.

Requirements

  • A Minimum BSc (Hons)) in marine biology/marine science/oceanography or similar fields
  • A minimum of 1 – 3 years of practical experience in marine research or conservation work
  • A sound knowledge of environmental legislation, marine conservation practices and principles
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Proven experience in data management systems and data analysis
  • Willing and able to travel extensively to national parks and regularly conduct fieldwork.
  • Valid Code B driver’s license

Advantages:

  • Familiarity with baited remote underwater video systems (BRUVs) and Event Measure software
  • Knowledge of R or another statistical data analysis package

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive and long-term socio-ecological research and biodiversity monitoring within various marine protected areas.
  • Manage, curate, process, archive and maintain biodiversity data, ensuring accuracy, and contributing to verification and data analysis.
  • Produce technical and scientific reports and scientific reviews e.g., State of Knowledge Reports, and compile comprehensive species lists for inclusion in MPA management plans.
  • Contribute to science-management engagements and MPA and estuarine management plans to ensure the effective management of critical marine ecosystems.
  • Share knowledge and information with a wide range of stakeholders to foster awareness and appreciation of marine ecosystems.

  • The above position is a permanent position and is based in Cape Town at the Cape Research Centre in Tokai. The cost to company remuneration package is based on the salary scale of a position with a Paterson C4 job grade will be offered. The successful candidate will have to provide their own accommodation as there is no official accommodation.

Activities Coordinator

A challenging vacancy currently exists for an Activity Coordinator at Addo Elephant National Park. The successful candidate will have to be a highly motivated individual with the necessary skills and expertise to take immediate control of all relevant activities within the park and will report to the Tourism Manager.

  • B. Tech Nature Conservation/Tourism/Ecotourism
  • 4 years doing tourism based activities and business management, while guiding for at least 3 years in a dangerous game area.
  • DEAT Registration (Nature Site Guide)
  • Valid EC (Code 10) Driver’s License
  • PDP (Valid Public Drivers Permit).
  • THETA Nature Site Guide (Dangerous Game Area) TGD/NSGDGm/4/0037 NQF Level 4 certificate (must include View Potentially Dangerous Game Unit Standard)
  • Sound knowledge of fauna & flora.
  • Bilingual (English & Afrikaans).
  • Valid First Aid certificate level 1.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation. (NEMPAA; National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, Tourism Second Amendment Act; Occupational Health and Safety Act and Fire Arms Control Act)
  • Interpersonal, computer literacy and administration skills
  • Assessor, Training Accreditation and experience in Hospitality Management will be an added advantage
  • Shortlisted candidates will be required to conduct a short game drive within Addo Elephant National Park as part of their practical test
  • The successful candidate will have to write and pass the recognised Addo exam before operating within the park.

  • To lead and develop the Human Capitol of the unit
  • To ensure sound financial management
