Energy Efficiency Projects

Main Outputs for the internship
Theproviding technical and logistical support in the development of a pipeline of public sector
energy efficiency projects – their tasks will therefore comprise support to following activities, but
not limited to:

  1. The development of a public sector energy efficiency project database, including-
    • Cataloguing all potential energy efficiency projects at the various stages of development
    (concept through to feasibility). Information will be source from various national and donor
    programmes, NGOs, academic institutions and direct from public institutions;
    • Monitoring the status of the project pipeline;
    • Identification of high priority projects/ projects at advanced stage of development, including
    next steps for development.
  2. Support to Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management (EEDSM) programme, including
    project monitoring.
  3. Preparation of briefing reports on public sector energy efficiency.
  4. Conducting and supporting activities as and when required.

    • An Undergraduate degree in an area related to: energy, engineering, environment,
    economics or related subject.
    The Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings and Infrastructure Programme (EEPBIP) aims
    to employ a South African graduate for the purpose of an internship. The EEPBIP, funded by
    the NAMA Facility, supports the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) in
    scaling-up energy efficiency projects in public sector institutions.
    The Job description below is for an intern to be employed to support DMRE in activities with
    energy efficiency project identification for municipalities, provinces, national
    government and State-Owned Entities. The position will be based at the DMRE offices
    within the Energy Efficiency Branch in Visage Street, Pretoria.

    • Candidates in the possession of, or in progress of completing a postgraduate degree will
    be favoured.
    Competencies Experience:
    • Minimum of 1 year experience in energy project development;
    • Experience with project management;
    • Experience working with public sector institutions;
    • Excellent communication skills (oral and written English);
    • Excellent MS-office skills (outlook, power point, word, excel);
    • Ability to work independently and proactively with minimal supervision.
    • Knowledge of a range of energy efficiency technologies, including small-scale
    embedded generation, will be advantageous:
    o Understanding of building energy efficiency, including lighting, HVAC, water heating
    and building management systems;
    o Understanding of energy efficiency in street lighting/ traffic lights
    o Understanding of water/ waste-water treatment plant operations and energy efficiency
    o Understanding of the application of small-scale embedded generation technologies on
    • This Internship will be based at the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE)
    within the Energy Efficiency Branch in Visage Street, Pretoria;
    • The internship period for this position is only six (06) Months.
