Position Overview

The National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute (NRWDI) is seeking an experienced and proactive Risk Officer to strengthen its governance and risk management capabilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing, implementing, and maintaining an effective Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework that enables the organisation to identify, evaluate, mitigate, monitor, and report strategic, operational, financial, and compliance risks in line with legislative requirements and governance best practices.

This role will contribute to sound corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and informed decision-making across the organisation.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • A National Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent qualification in one of the following fields:
    • Risk Management
    • Commerce
    • Law (LLB)
    • Business Administration
    • Or a related discipline

Experience

  • A minimum of three years’ experience in risk management, compliance, governance, or a related field.

Key Responsibilities

Enterprise Risk Management

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve the organisation’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework.
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive compliance framework aligned with applicable regulatory and governance requirements.
  • Facilitate organisation-wide risk identification processes and provide recommendations to management on appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct risk assessments in collaboration with risk owners, evaluating both inherent and residual risks.
  • Recommend and implement measures to strengthen risk controls and reduce exposure.
  • Promote a proactive approach to risk identification, assessment, monitoring, and mitigation across the organisation.

Compliance and Governance

  • Conduct compliance risk assessments and implement controls to address identified compliance risks.
  • Ensure adherence to the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), National Treasury Regulations, the Public Sector Risk Management Framework, and other relevant governance requirements.
  • Support the organisation in maintaining compliance with applicable legislative and regulatory obligations.

Reporting and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Prepare risk reports, dashboards, and analyses for management, executive leadership, and governance committees.
  • Develop and implement effective reporting mechanisms for the Board, Audit and Risk Committee, and Executive Committee.
  • Prepare and present compliance and risk management reports to Board Committees and regulatory authorities in a clear, accurate, and professional manner.
  • Monitor complaint management processes to ensure concerns are addressed effectively, tracked appropriately, and reported to governance structures without unexpected issues.
