12 Months fixed term contract

Salary: R4 407 per month (R209.86 per day)

Location: Must reside within the communities of the uMsunduzi Local Municipality

(Preference given to Sobantu and Greater Edendale areas)

KEY TASKS:

• Work with people in the community who want to make a difference to their environment

• Facilitate learning opportunities and community change projects for the common good

• Start and champion a community environmental change project of your own that you can

continue beyond the 12 months (practice what you preach)

• Get involved in appropriate local committees/groups, and talk about environmental issues

• Keep enthusiasm for change going in team members / community members you are working with

• Conflict management with your community change project team

• Teach citizen science tools to anyone who wants to learn, including schools

• Undertake regular biomonitoring (using tools provided) at monitoring sites determined by DUCT. Log these, and ensure they are verified

• Report back all activities to DUCT on a weekly basis – written and verbal

• Attend weekly planning/training day at DUCT every Friday

• Train people to undertake Impact tasks (YOMA)

• Monitor and report sewage line leakages, blockages and surcharges

• Monitor and report fresh water leaks

• Monitor and report illegal dump-sites

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POST

• Has worked for DUCT, and understands the vision, mission and way DUCT works. Preferably

was employed within a DUCT programme.

• Lives in the community where you will be working

• Fluent in English and isiZulu

• Basic computer literacy – can work with spreadsheets, and write up documents in Word

• Can work with Field Survey (and has a phone to do so)

• Excellent verbal communication skills across cultural and political boundaries – to

community, DUCT and clients

• Community networking

• Conflict management

• Self-motivated

• Understands basic river ecology and environmental principles

• Problem solver

• Data collection – and seeks to understand and apply what the data is saying

• Map reading and interpretation

• Basic report writing

Opportunities for training and skills development will be provided as part of the employment.

• 1 Page CV, with a covering letter motivating why you are suited to the role.

• 1 Minute video submission – Find an environmental problem in your neighborhood. Propose

a challenge to your community to find solutions to the problem. The target audience for this

video, which must be able to be sent via WhatsApp, is for you to introduce yourself to your

neighbours, bring an environmental problem to their attention, and invite them to work with you to find a solution.

RECRUITMENT CRITERIA:

• Candidate has not previously participated or been employed in any YES programme

• Age – between the age of 18 and 27 (the individual can be 28 at initiation of their contract)

• Previously disadvantaged (African, Indian & Coloured)

• Candidates with a disability are encouraged to apply

• Must be currently unemployed

• Education level – passed Gr10 & above.

• Grade 10 – 11 report / Matric Certificate

If your highest qualification is Grade 10 or 11, you will be required to do a short English proficiency test.
