Artisan Assistant (Six-month contract)
About the job:
The CSIR has an opportunity for an Artisan Assistant in the Industrial Sensors Impact Area within the Manufacturing Cluster. The selected incumbent will be responsible for conducting manual manufacturing activities of the electro-mechanical systems developed by the Industrial Sensors Impact Area for purposes of phototyping and/ or delivery to clients. The incumbent will be involved in operation of small hand tools, conducting mechanical assembly procedures, gluing of components, mechanical testing of components and final devices, updating of process record sheet documentation during manufacturing work. The position is based inPretoria.
Key responsibilities:
- Perform mechanical metal preparation activities;
- Carry-out specialised chemical and mechanical cleaning processes;
- Conduct mechanical assembly activities;
- Record collection and delivery of electro-mechanical systems made from sheet metal parts, mechanical assemblies and electronic sub-systems;
- Carry-out specialised adhesive bonding processes;
- Conduct mechanical testing of manufactured items;
- Perform, installation and set to work activities in the field of manufactured items.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- Grade 12 technical school qualification with two years relevant working experience in a manufacturing environment with exposure to metal work and mechanical assembly;
- Prior experience in a manufacturing role of products requiring mechanical assembly will be advantageous;
- Good understanding of test methods and procedures;
- Ability to conduct fine mechanical assembly / testing work;
- Ability to use specialized hand tools correctly and effectively;
- Be able to handle delicate equipment and hand tools.
