EPWP Programme Employment Opportunity: 2X SEMI-SKILLED ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORS (Socio Economic)
EPWP Employment opportunity currently exists for 2 x Semiskilled Environmental Monitor within Golden Gate Highlands National Park. The above-stated position is a fixed-term contract up to the end of 31 March 2026. The appointed participant or Environmental Monitors will be paid a wage rate of R 208,00 per day as per Expanded Public Works Programme rates>

Requirements
- Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification (Standard 10).
- A Certificate or Diploma in Natural Environment or a related field will be considered an advantage.
- Valid Code B (08) driver’s license will be an added advantage.
- Computer literacy, with proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.).
- Must be in good physical health and capable of performing field duties.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and after-hours, as operational needs require.
- Proficient in English, with strong written, verbal, and presentation skills; knowledge of additional official languages is an asset.
- No criminal record – Candidates must submit a valid SAPS Clearance Certificate.
- Basic understanding of Health and Safety principles.
- Must have own transport and accommodation (no staff housing is available).
- Must be willing to undergo a fitness assessment as part of the recruitment process.
- Preference will be given to local candidates; proof of residence must be submitted.
Responsibilities
- Ecological monitoring and environmental education duties.
- Assist in Co-ordination of all activities and tasks to maintain the purposeful functioning of the department.
- Planning and presenting of environmental program.
- Assist in organising and implementing environmental education programs and awareness events and programs.
- To perform cleaning duties at Wilgehof EE Centre facilities and surrounding areas to the prescribed standard.
- Assist in preparing the Wilgenhof Environmental education centre facilities, including dining area, kitchen, passages, ablution facilities as well as the open areas.
- Comply with health and safety requirements applicable in SANParks, including hygiene standards.
- Ensure the that the kitchen and pantry including all equipment and storerooms are clean at all times.
- Assist with stock control, cleaning materials and other consumables.
- General administration – including timesheets, logbooks, and reports.
- Assist with natural resource management.
- Willingness to do ADHOC duties.

Requirements
- A Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification (Standard 10).
- A valid Code 10 driver’s license.
- At least 1 Year related experience in a technical/maintenance field.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic administrative knowledge.
- Computer literacy will be an added advantage.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Safety-conscious, with sound knowledge of safe work practices.
- Familiarity with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and other applicable legislation.
- No criminal record – Candidates must submit a valid SAPS Clearance Certificate.
- Willingness to work overtime, including weekends and public holidays, as operationally required.
- Must have own reliable transport and accommodation (staff housing is not provided).
- Must be willing to undergo a fitness assessment as part of the selection process.
Responsibilities
- This position performs general electrical maintenance and repairs on building equipment.
- Replacing and repairing wires, switches, fixtures, motors, pumps, boilers, and other duties while assisting handyman with daily duties.
- Physically carrying out of semi-skilled tasks such as building, tiling, painting, plumbing, and small carpentry works in accordance with predetermined quality and productivity and set standards.
- Trade related work such as repairs or maintenance to buildings, structures, etc.
- Assisting with fleet Management/Administrations.
- Routine maintenance of which includes all tourist buildings, staff accommodation, ablution blocks, administration, and technical buildings. But not limited to other requirements in civil building areas, new and existing.
- Daily stock control reporting and documentation of any anomalies to supervisor.
- General cleaning and upkeep of work areas, technical stores, and equipment.
- Perform daily services throughout the park providing a clean, safe, and pleasant environment for staff and visitors.
- Assist with other ad-hoc tasks as required by Supervisor / Management.

- Physically fit, with the ability to conduct extended patrols in challenging terrain, including mountainous areas.
- The successful candidate will be required to undergo a medical fitness examination conducted by a certified medical practitioner.

- A valid driver’s license will be considered an advantage.
- Firearm competency in Self-Loading Rifles, Manually Operated Rifles, and 9mm Pistols will be a strong advantage.

Responsibilities
- Conduct law enforcement activities (Patrols, Monitoring, Anti-poaching, problem animal control by means of foot, Horses, or vehicle).
- Assist with infrastructure maintenance (Fence, Trail Maintenance, Soil Erosion and Rehabilitation management systems, Roads, etc).
- Ensure accurate records of incidents or sightings are kept.
- Assist with relevant Conservation activities when required – (Clearing of Alien Species).
