Sasol Mining operates six coal mines that supply feedstock for our Southern African integrated value chain. The coal supplied to Secunda Synfuels Operations (SSO) is mainly used as gasification feedstock and some is used to generate electricity. The coal supplied to Sasolburg Operations (SO) is used to generate electricity and steam. We also export coal from the Twistdraai Export Plant to international power generation customers via the Richards Bay Coal Terminal.


The purpose of the job is to assist with the everyday operation of the plant, fault finding, programming on EC&I equipment and overall improvement of problem areas.

 Ensures the condition (predictive maintenance) are adhered on all plant’s electrical and instrumentation equipment and deviations addressed prior to failure.

 Accountable for the full value chain of engineering solutions and governance in his/her area of responsibility, owns execution, auditing and management of visualization of plant equipment and PLC programming.                                                                                                                                                                                                                             


Knowledge and experience of:

  • PLC programming (Allen-Bradley PLC to your advantage)
  • VSD configuration and trouble shooting
  • Installation and Calibration of instruments ( level, distance, flow and density transmitters, control valves)
  • Conveyor belt pull key systems
  • Environmental monitoring systems
  • Basic optic fiber and copper network communication systems (Ehernet, Modbus RTU, DeviceNet, ControlNet)
  • SCADA and Reporting systems (RS-View SE SCADA, Historian, Data Logging, Vantage Point)
  • Level control systems
  • Process automation Scales
  • Medium voltage switching
  • Maintenance on power transformers

  • Grade 12 or equivalent certificate with English, Maths & Science
  • N6 Electrical Engineering or Equivalent with electrical/eletro-mech trade test
  • National diploma/Higher diploma (Electrical or Instrumentation) will be to your advantage
  • Valid driver’s license and Own transport

Specific experience required

  • Ability to read electrical, instrumentation drawings and able interpret them
  • Trouble shooting and fault finding on electrical, control and Instrumentation systems
  • Planning and execution of tasks
  • Typically 5 years’ experience in production environment on maintenance and repair of Electrical, Control, PLC programming and Instrumentation equipment
  • PLC, VSD programming and data management
